Famous Novels’ First Sentences, Mapped [Infographic]
Sentence diagrams never looked this good
By Colin Lecher
Maybe you spent a week in school making these, but the ones in your class almost definitely didn’t look as good. The folks at Pop Chart Lab, which now has an oeuvre of infographics depicting everything from classic games to beer, took a literary turn with their latest chart. A Diagrammatical Dissertation on Opening Lines of Notable Novels (itself one hell of a tongue-twister) is a series of simple Reed-Kellogg sentence diagrams, but there’s something special about placing them all next to each other. The start of Don Quixote looks especially circuitous next to the deceivingly simple “124 was spiteful” of Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Plus, “A screaming comes across the sky,” from Gravity’s Rainbow, is appropriately askew in this format. (More information here)
A Tower Inspired By Trees, Complete With Balconies For Leaves
Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto has designed a compelling plan for a mixed-use tower in the south of France, based on the structure of a tree. Fujimoto’s 17-story structure, called the White Tree, is curved to offer the best views of the surrounding landscape—both to its own inhabitants and those of its neighbors, neither of whom want their sightline blocked. Balconies stretch chaotically out from the building like leaves growing toward the sun.

A Wedding Under the Great Oak
My beloved niece will soon be married on the family ranch, under an ancient oak that we love. I shared the job of creating a beautiful, meaningful invitation with designer Carmen Garza, whose selection of an engraving from Emblems of Immortality (published 1795) was perfect. She used classical iconography—acorn to oak, caterpillar to butterfly—to represent perpetual renewal, and wrapped the invitation in lace as delicate and intricate as the couple’s shared memories. A deep-red wax seal is the finishing touch on this very special memento.

LIVESTRONG gets a new symbolLast week LIVESTRONG Foundation unveiled its new symbol, designed by Rigsby Hull, calling it “subtle but substantive” and a “natural step” in the organization’s evolution. Too subtle? It’s been discussed by media from Wall St Journal to Ad Age and the Non-Profit Times, but the best analysis so far is from Matt Wilson: “What will really make a difference for LIVESTRONG isn’t how they look, it is what they do. They will be judged by deeds, not design.”
Irma Boom designed a book for the perfume Chanel No. 5. This beautiful book is absolutely ink free. Since the book is embossed, the team had to figure out a way how to bind it without pressing it, which resulted in having uneven pages. The book is 300 pages and 5 cm thick, a nod to the perfume’s name. -BY LIZ STINSON; Wire Magazine;

Duchess Anna Amalia of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel 1739 –1807 was a German princess and composer. She became the duchess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, by marriage. She also established the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, which is now home to some 1,000,000 volumes.
A fire at the historic Anna Amalia Library in Weimar, Germany destroyed some 60,000 books and damaged 118,000 others in 2004. The library building has been restored.
